  3. Autumnal Listening: Mark Eitzel American Music Club

centerimg width=500 src="http://www.american-music-club.com/images/amc-gamh1.jpg"/centerBRDespite their longevity, a recent reunion and the constant hard work of frontman Mark Eitzel, American Music Club are still one of the most under-listened to bands of the last 20 years, especially when Eitzel is a songwriting genius who should be celebrated as a true treasure. Maybe it's down to a lot of their back catalogue being out of print, stuck in major label vaults with nobody to reissue them, or maybe it's just sheer ignorance or bad luck, but AMC are many of my readers dream band, but they just don't know it yet. Fans of The National, Red House Painters, Low; take note: you need this band in your life. They also make the most perfectly autumnal music in the world; so please make some effort and do yourself a favour by listening to these songs. IRoyal Cafe/i in particular is one of my favourite songs ever written. Sheer beauty. The reason I post them is that the band, with a slightly rejigged lineup have got another album, named iMacArthur Park/i is due out on Merge in early 2008, with a world tour to follow. Meanwhile Eitzel will be performing solo in the very intimate surroundings of London's Luminaire on the a href="http://www.theluminaire.com/live-music-October-2007-577.php?PHPSESSID=54d2c1a1a b2733611268d82d122fca32"14th October/a, playing solo tracks, AMC favourites and songs from the forthcoming record. I can't get to it, but maybe you could. And if you could and don't, you're an idiot.br /BRa href="http://jamiesrunoutgroove.brooner.co.uk/American Music Club - Big Night.mp3"American Music Club - Big Night/aBRa href="http://jamiesrunoutgroove.brooner.co.uk/American Music Club - Outside This Bar.mp3"American Music Club - Outside This Bar/aBRa href="http://jamiesrunoutgroove.brooner.co.uk/American Music Club - Royal Cafe.mp3"American Music Club - Royal Cafe/aBRa href="http://jamiesrunoutgroove.brooner.co.uk/American Music Club - Sick of Food.mp3"American Music Club - Sick of Food/aBRBRdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/JamiesRunoutGroove?a=qtEif6ia"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/JamiesRunoutGroove?i=qtEif6ia" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/JamiesRunoutGroove?a=hBk4i8KF"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/JamiesRunoutGroove?i=hBk4i8KF" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/JamiesRunoutGroove?a=RUkn7Sms"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/JamiesRunoutGroove?i=RUkn7Sms" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/JamiesRunoutGroove?a=IN3RAvVx"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/JamiesRunoutGroove?i=IN3RAvVx" border="0"/img/a /div

This is really something different. It's not your typical 'indie rock/pop' person that I interview. Instead it's a singer whose vocal prowess is phenomenal and she's just as beautiful as her voice. Grammy nominated Monheit has just dropped her seventh album and still finds there's a goldmine of songs in the pop/jazz repetoire to sing-- and bring her own tone, quot;voicequot;, personality to each one of these songs and make them her own. /span/p pspan style="font-size: 1.4em;"Produced by thenbsp; magician producer, nbsp; Jorge Callandrelli (Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand and more, strongSurrender/strongnbsp; features 10 tracks ofnbsp; fabnbsp; ballads and sexy and romantic bossa novas.nbsp; nbsp; Now you might not recognize all these names but you do know Stevie Wonder and Jane coversnbsp; Stevie Wonder’s “Overjoyed” in anbsp; magical way. She also worked withnbsp; Sergio Mendes’ on hisnbsp; “So Many Stars,” which he produced, arranged and guests on, along with Johnny Mandel amp; Paul Francis Webster’s “A Time for Love.” There's so much depth to these songs, that they don't sound like classics but fresh material. /span/p pspan style="font-size: 1.4em;"Working with her core of musicians including Ari Ambrose (saxophone), Michael Kanan (piano and Fender Rhodes), Orlando Le Fleming (bass), Rick Montalbano (drums) and Miles Okazaki (guitar), Monheitnbsp; has shown us that not only can she do the classics, but she can take contemporary material and make it gorgeous as well as venture into Brazilian jazzy bossa nova beats and produce a lush, sexy quot;meet me in Rioquot; feelnbsp; to these amazing songs - and she's very very good at interpreting the romance of the language. /span/p pspan style="font-size: 1.4em;"Check out the podcast so that you can learn the who, what, where, why and how about this album as Jane Monheit gives us some time to ask her about her newest quot;babyquot; and what she's doing in her life when she's not on the road or in the studio-- and you will be surprised at the things she really loves. Or -- if you already listen to Monheit-- you won't be surprised. She's a multi-faceted, fun-loving person whose enthusiasm for her favorite things should be 'bottledquot; for it's pop and fizz. On emone/em side, you#8217;ve got a href="http://www.lennonsbar.com/"Lennon#8217;s Bar/a, and, on the other, the famously-rebuilt emCavern Club/em.br / In fact, it#8217;s just beside where the emold/em one #8212; where The Beatles, Searchers, Big Three and many other top bands cut their musical teeth #8212; stood em(Spencer Hannabuss,/em bass player/vocalist/songwriter for emThe Fore/em,says he#8217;s heard there#8217;s a emdoor/em in the ladies#8217; room of the new one that you can go through and see the emoriginal/em Cavern).br / The Club #8212; extremely popular as always (partly due to the music, partly due to legacy) #8212; is still emthe/em place to go if acts wanna be noticed!/p pNow, we#8217;ve all heard about JPG#038;R and emtheir/em conquest of both Cavern and, in due time, the world. But there were emunsung/em (pardon the pun) heroes of UK rock whose presence at The Club was just as exciting and boisterous.br / For example, emFaron#8217;s Flamingos/em were a emtremendous/em hit for three reasons: bassist #8220;Faron#8221; Ruffley#8217;s wild jumps and dynamic voice, drummer Trevor Morais#8217; crazy #8220;back-flip#8221; during the set, and, of course, some of the most emrockin#8217;/em music of the time.br / Here, in emthis/em vid, you#8217;ll not only experience FF for emyourself/em but get a bit of a feel for the old Cavern:br / centerbFARON#8217;S FLAMINGOS AT THE ORIGINAL CAVERN/bbr / object width="425" height="344" param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/D4yz7rsv-Gs#038;hl=en#038;fs=1"/param param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"/paramembed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/D4yz7rsv-Gs#038;hl=en#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"/embed/object/center/p pThe emother/em was a trio called emThe Big Three./em Not only could they emrock,/em but they really knew how to work a crowd! They emalso/em had a tie-in with Faron (see above), as he and Paddy Chambers (guitarist) joined the Big Three in 1963, when Johnny Gustafson (bass) and Brian Griffiths (drums) left.br / But here are the emoriginals,/em doing a href="http://www.merseybeatnostalgia.co.uk/assets/multimedia/Reelin__and_Rockin_.WMA" Reelin#8217; and Rockin#8217;/a, straight from the Cavern Club!/p pOf course, emR#038;R/em was originally one of emChuck Berry#8217;s/em hits, and it brings us to the subject of emcover songs/em. Natch, in Liverpool, sailors would bring American 45s back to port, and many of the emskiffle/em groups would take the songs and more-or-less emadopt/em them. When they switched over to electrics and drumkits, they would use these songs as part of their earliest sets.br / For example, emThe Paramounts/em would be known for the Leiber/Stoller (or Coasters#8217; ) hit, emPoison Ivy./em Later, this group would disband and, years later, re-form with original members as emProcol Harum./embr / Another band specialized in emEverly Brothers#8217;/em covers #8212; and some say that emThe Del Renas/em were thisclose to the Brothers#8217; amazing harmonies! One of their emfinest/em works was emthis/em one: a href="http://www.merseybeatnostalgia.co.uk/assets/multimedia/When_Will_I_Be_Loved.WMA "WHen Will I Be Loved?/a Though you can hear some differences, pay close attention to the vocal hooks and solo verses (Derek Green#8217;s spot-on as a Don Everly soundalike!). By the way, these guys are emalso/em the ones who#8217;ve been credited as introducing the first emorgan/em to UK rock bands!/p pToday, as we know, emThe Cavern Club/em is still emthe/em place to go for mood emand/em music throughout the Merseyside and beyond! One of the embest/em shows of recent was done by emThe Fore/em during the Liverpool IPO Festival. In the Adlon lobby we met and gossiped and exchanged news. In the Adlon bar we rolled dice for drinks#8230; When I was first in Berlin, I recall, Dorothy Thompson and Sigrid Shultz wouldn#8217;t come into the Adlon bar; they stayed in lady-like aloofness, in the lobby or restaurant. Later they relented; but Sigrid never ordered anything but a Shultz cocktail. She wouldn#8217;t tell me what it was. I asked Fred, the barman. #8220;Das ist ein Geheimnis!#8221; he answered. I asked Franz, another barman. #8220;Dat iss a secret!#8221; he replied. Finaly Sigrid herself told me. 39. Conservative Comic Evan Sayet
  40. 27 Dec 2007 at 5:13pm
pEvan (a href="http://www.evansayet.com"EvanSayet.com/a) calls me Dec. 26./p pa href="http://www.lukeford.net/Images/photos/evansayet.wav"Audio/a a href="http://www.lukeford.net/Images/photos/evansayet1.wav"Audio/a a href="http://www.lukeford.net/Images/photos/evansayet2.wav"Audio/a/p pEvan, 47: quot; You got questions written out or off the top of your head?quot;/p pLuke: quot;I#8217;ve got them in my head.quot;/p pEvan: quot;Good.quot;/p pLuke: quot; How has your life changed since September 13?quot;/p pEvan: quot;I made a full scale change. I had some contractual obligations that made the career change not immediate. When I wrote quot;fade to blackquot; on my last Hollywood project, I#8217;ve been wholely removed from Hollywood. My roladex of 20 years is meaningless to me now. I could get a meeting at #8216;Queer Eye For The Straight Guy#8217; but that#8217;s not what I#8217;m looking for./p pquot;Suddenly I needed to be respected, appreciated and paid by a whole new set of people, mostly out of Washington. I#8217;m now in the conservative thought industry as opposed to the entertainment industry.quot;/p pquot;I#8217;ve had to start over as far as building up a fan base#8230; Instead of writing jokes for latenight television or a half-hour sitcom, I#8217;m writing articles. I have a book coming out in July from a href="http://www.regnery.com/"Regnery/a.quot;/p pquot;I am definitely a happier and more motivated person. I look forward to every day now because there is a purpose to it. There#8217;s something deeper in being involved in global politics rather than Hollywood politics./p pquot;It#8217;s easier to be a narcissist when you are in the Hollywood community than when you are in the political community.quot;/p pEvan is divorced (1996) with two kids (one biological)./p pEvan: quot;My son (17yo) was a Republican before I was.quot;/p pquot;I was the quintessential modern liberal. The pathology that I now write about, I not only suffered from but was the quintessential example of.quot;/p pLuke: quot;Did you stop being a narcissist in a few weeks?quot;/p pEvan: quot; No. It wasn#8217;t an epiphany. Being aware that the Islamists were murdering the Jews of Israel for no other reason than they were the closest infidels, there was no doubt in my mind that when they could, they would come kill the biggest infidels. When they murdered us on 9/11, that didn#8217;t surprise me. What surprised me was my liberal friends#8217; response to 9/11: that we deserved it, it was a result of our policies, and that the way to ensure it didn#8217;t happen again was to give the terrorists what they wanted.quot;/p pquot; As I#8217;d see liberals side with the murderers, I needed to search for other allies, for people who would defend America. So I sought out Republicans. I heard them speak. They got it. That America was good and the terrorists were bad. This one issue was all that mattered./p pquot; As I introduced myself to Republicans, I found out they were not religious fanatics. Slowly, over time, I opened my eyes to a whole bunch of things.quot;/p pLuke: quot; What is a narcissist?quot;/p pEvan: quot;People who have rejected anything bigger than themselves#8230;. They have nowhere to look outside of themselves for the truth.quot;/p pLuke: quot; How have your friendships changed? Did you lose friends?quot;/p pEvan: quot; No. I lost interest in some of the more shallow friends who I still love and we can still be together but we don#8217;t talk about anything. We can#8217;t talk about politics. If you don#8217;t agree with a liberal, they hate you because you#8217;re a bad person#8230; We have to tiptoe around every issue of substance.quot;/p pquot; How are you responding to my views? They#8217;re pretty strong.quot;/p pLuke: quot;My views are right-wing but most of my work is not ideologically driven. I basically agree with your views but when I interview or write, I#8217;m rarely pushing anything but to get the best interview possible.quot;/p pEvan: quot; That makes you a pro for what you#8217;re doing.quot;/p pThree times Evan has been on my favorite tv show #8212; Red Eye on Fox News./p pquot; The format is difficult for me,quot; he says. quot;It#8217;s so quick and so many people, you don#8217;t have much of a chance to delve deeply into any point you make. By then they#8217;ve cut to the 22yo chick with the tits#8230; I#8217;d rather be on Charlie Rose.quot;/p pLuke: quot;What#8217;s the breakdown of stand-up comics? Is it five to one liberal to conservative?quot;/p pEvan: quot;If you mean television, they#8217;re all liberal. Club comics, about ten to one.quot;/p pquot; In the comedy clubs, nobody is talking politics unless you#8217;re drawing a big audience to see you. Otherwise, there#8217;s no guarantee your audience has any knowledge of politics or cares about politics or shares your politics.quot;/p pquot;Bob Costas was asked by Bernard Goldberg why athletes do such stupid things such as getting into gun fights in bars. Costas said, #8216;Because they came to prominence before they came to maturity.#8217; That#8217;s true of show business people in general./p pquot; The reason that show business is so leftist is that you become the boss, Bruce Springsteen, at 22. In what other profession is that true? In other professions, you become the CEO at 58./p pquot; You have people who#8217;ve never had a job#8230; Rich Rogers has a great line: #8216;I#8217;ve got the only job in the world where I tell my friends, #8216;I#8217;ve got to go to work. I#8217;ll be right back.#8217;/p pquot; You are above everyone else. You#8217;re standing on a stage. You#8217;re louder than anybody else. You#8217;ve got the mic. You#8217;re the one in the light. This breeds narcissism. You never enter the real world. You never have a job. You never have a bad boss. You never have a bad day. If I have a bad day at work, twenty minutes later, it#8217;s over. It#8217;s a breeding ground for liberalism./p pquot; If you make it as a stand-up, you#8217;re going to stick with the same personna and material#8230; What you were at 22, you are at 40.quot;/p pLuke: quot;Is there something inherent in comedy that leans left?quot;/p pEvan: quot; No. There#8217;s something inherent in being young that leans left.quot;/p pLuke: quot;Is humor suppressed hostility?quot;/p pEvan: quot;I don#8217;t think so.quot;/p pquot; Most people think there are two parts to a joke #8212; the set-up and the punchline. They#8217;re wrong. There are three parts. The set-up, the audience anticipation and the punchline which is true to the set-up but 180 degrees from what the audience expected. That#8217;s the perfect joke./p pquot;I#8217;ll give you an example. Steve Martin says, #8216;I like to put a woman on a pedastal.#8217;/p pquot; The audience#8217;s assumption is that he admires women. His punchline is: #8216;I like to put a woman on a pedastal#8230;just high enough to see up her dress.#8217;/p pquot;Joan Rivers says, #8216;My rape whistle#8230;plays Sinatra.#8217;quot;/p pLuke: quot;I think of comedy as tearing things down and I think of conservatism as conserving.quot;/p pquot; There wasn#8217;t Jewish comedy until Jews became secular. If you look at the sacred texts of the Jewish tradition#8230;quot;/p pEvan: quot; They only had two pieces of paper back then. They could save up what Maimonidies said or they could save what Shecky said. I doubt jokes weren#8217;t being made as they escaped from the Egyptians#8230;quot;/p pLuke: quot;Where are you and God?quot;/p pEvan: quot;I started with the same disdain that the Left has for those who believe in God. I believed that all religions are basically the same, though the Jews were slightly better. My entire Jewish experience was at eight days old, they cut me. At thirteen, I said some words in a language I didn#8217;t understand and they threw me a party. About ten years later, I stepped on a glass and was married./p pquot;I didn#8217;t consider taking religion seriously until I met my religious friends, my Jewish by choice friends#8230; I believe in God. I wish I was more of a practicing Jew. Not yet./p pquot;I can#8217;t say God and I are friends, but we talk.quot;/p pLuke: quot; How has your transition since 9/11 affected your dating life?quot;/p pEvan: quot;I don#8217;t have a dating life. I#8217;m not good dating material at this point. I#8217;m too focused on getting up to speed in this new career. I was making a decent living as a journeyman gun-for-hire. Suddenly I was talking before ten people at the San Fernando Valley townhall conservatives for, if I was lucky, a free dinner./p pquot;I#8217;m focused on writing my book, getting my blog pieces out, giving my lectures and doing my radio interviews#8230; I wouldn#8217;t be a good boyfriend.quot;/p pLuke: quot;What#8217;s your sense of your attractiveness to the opposite sex as you#8217;ve made this journey?quot;/p pEvan: quot;/p p!--adsense-- /p
